Tijdens de corona lockdown, ben ik verhuisd. Al mijn spullen zijn afzonderlijk van elkaar ingepakt. Ze raken elkaar niet aan, zoals wij nu met elkaar om moeten gaan. In mijn atelier ben ik nu al die papieren aan het vouwen. Verhuizen is een intense tijd. Mijn tijd staat stil en beweegt tegelijkertijd. Ik voel de behoefte om al die papieren in regelmaat op te vouwen en te stapelen. Ze te verbinden, zonder spullen.

These two images were made during my personal struggle with Corona. Whether it was this virus or not we still do not know, since only now the tests are becoming available and my symptoms did not match the 'classical' listing. Nevertheless, it was a very tough and frightening time for me even though I managed to heal at home, not in hospital. I barely photographed during this period, but this self-portrait steaming and the blood test to check my immunity against Covid are both significant moments of my experience during the acute phase of Corona days.

This tradition of depicting skeletons inviting people with various professions for a dance fitted into my recent research about labor relationships, reminding us of our own vulnerability, despite our status or profession.

Italian photographer Paolo Ventura was stranded in the medieval town of Anghiari without his camera during the Corona crisis. He hasn’t been allowed to leave the apartment for ten days – that’s how he started painting.
Subsequently he was interviewd by Weltkunst. Ventura told them that to paint is for him completely different; “The artistic process is completely different if you start from scratch. In a way, I enjoy it. Sometimes I even think that when this is over, I want to be quarantined again. I don’t have to think about anything other than what I’m doing. Not of my son’s homework, not of the fear, the panic … when I concentrate, my head is in another dimension and I can just paint.”

This work depicts different aspects of the times we live in, one of which will be mentioned here: It looks into the neoliberal plague and how social resistance arises despite of physical social distance. It highlights sovereignty of all the people and our innate equality that is not reflected by the dominant political system. The urgency of life cannot be sustained by a profit-based economy. It reassesses geopolitics, as the destructive role of imperialist countries is showcased.

Valerie van Leersum (1973). In mijn werk als kunstenaar en vormgever onderzoek ik de relatie tussen mens en landschap. Hoe vormt het landschap de mens en geeft de mens op zijn beurt vorm aan de relatie met het landschap?
Dit onderzoek verbeeld ik in beelden en installaties die zijn opgebouwd uit diverse media. Soms staan de werken op zichzelf, in andere gevallen zijn ze onderdeel van een veel-luik of een doorlopend proces. Het werk beweegt zich tussen de feitelijke geschiedenis aan de ene kant en het objectief beleefde aan de andere kant. Vanuit een artistiek onderzoek, streef ik naar een poëtische abstracte verbeelding die de kijker uitnodigt om te bewegen tussen persoonlijke ervaring en de grotere context van een fenomeen.
Geïnspireerd door de verschillende vormen waarop men uiting geeft aan verbondenheid met grond en de lokale omgeving, fotografeer ik sinds enige tijd rituelen. Aangespoord door de situatie waarin we ons op dit moment bevinden, ben ik naast de verzameling bestaande gebruiken afgelopen periode ook zelf rituelen gaan bedenken en fotograferen. In een tijd waar we worden uitgenodigd opnieuw te kijken naar hetgeen we waardevol vinden in het leven, in het omgaan met elkaar en onze omgeving, verbeelden deze kleine, persoonlijke rituelen wat me bezig houdt. Het werk is opgebouwd uit film-still achtige beelden die worden gecombineerd met teksten die gaan over overpeinzingen, gebruik, gevoel en wensen die daarbij gepaard gaan.

We zitten door het Corona virus vast in een ongemakkelijke positie en we moeten het geduld hebben om ons aan te passen aan de nieuwe omstandigheden. Zelfs als je wilt dat het sneller gaat om een comfortabele positie te vinden.
Bedreigend, maar ook vredig.
De lichamen liggen als het ware als lege omhulsels te wachten. Alsof ze nog geboren moeten worden. Als poppen zonder ziel of gevoelsleven. Ze kunnen geen connectie met elkaar maken of affectie tonen.
Zonder de installatie werkt de film ook, maar hij komt nog beter tot zijn recht als hij in een installatie getoond kan worden. Het filmscherm wordt dan in een gebruikte dansvloer gemonteerd. Bovenop het scherm komt dan een even groot aquarium als het scherm gevuld met water. De lichamen lijken dan onder de vloer te liggen, zodat het gevoel van afstandelijkheid nog meer versterkt wordt. Ik heb hier in mijn studio een maquette van Sleepers in een installatie opstelling, deze kan ik jullie sturen mocht het nodig zijn.

Corona - solar eclipse

After the lockdown I was homebound for two weeks. The first day back in my studio I jumped straight into material that collected at Schuimhuis during my first orientation for Salon Craft. A project where artists and designers collaborate with crafts people in de Pijp. The first experiments led to a light image that displayed resemblance to an aura or corona of a solar eclipse. Like a revelation or lucky coincidence this image shows that a word we now only associate with a virus can also be something beautiful.
